Brindabella

In 2007 I was asked by Melbourne based choreographer Phillip Adams to create a section of a dance that he was making based on the story of "La Belle et Le Bête" (Beauty and the Beast). Fascinated by the strangeness of this invitation, I happily accepted. I'm glad I did because it was my first trip to Australia and it gave me the opportunity to work with an amazing group of dancers. It's still one of my fondest memories of making something. We basically ripped the story open and let it fall apart, using material from a variety of media based on Beauty and the Beast - the 80's TV show, the Cocteau film and the Disney film - interspersed with a series of breathy poems that I wrote in an almost fever-dream state of jetlag and lust.

Choreography:
Phillip Adams and Miguel Gutierrez for BalletLab

Performers: Tim Harvey, Derrick Amanatidis, Brooke Stamp and Luke George
Musicians: Lachlan Dent (Cello),
Nic Synot (Double Bass), Timothy Phillips (Percussion)
Premiered 2007, Malthouse Theatre Melbourne

Here's a preview of the piece. My material is all the stuff where they're in their underwear.
